Membership Renewal Time

It's time to renew your membership.  If you're not a member, why not become one now.  Membership runs through to July 31, 2011.  Full details are on the website at http://www.vtea.ca/member.htm

For some, membership is free.  Each rider or their parent is entitled to one free membership.  Others from the same family would need to pay for a membership.  Volunteers who have volunteered for more than 16 hours in the past year are entitled to a free membership.

For others, a small charge applies.  You can become an Annual Member through to July 31, 2011 by paying $5.  If you also make a donation, then an income tax receipt can be issued for the whole amount if the total is above $20.  A new feature this year is that you can become a Lifetime Member by paying $35 and you will receive an income tax receipt for this.

To become a member, please fill in one of the membership application forms.  If you believe we already have your email address, postal address, telephone number, etc, then all we need on the form is your name and telephone number.  You should then hand the form (and your payment if you do not qualify for a free membership)  to the office or to one of the staff members.  Alternatively you can post the form and your payment to VTEA, PO Box  1324, Aldergrove, BC V4W 2V1.  You should mark the envelope "Membership application".  Your 2010/2011 or Lifetime Membership card will be available during September.

Your membership gives you:

  • The knowledge that you are helping VTEA to provide excellent services to its special needs children
  • Participation in an active community that creates a lot of happiness and fun
  • The right to be involved in decisions affecting how the Association operates at the Annual General Meeting and at other general meetings that may be called from time to time.  This applies provided you have been a member in good standing for at least 60 days prior to any such meeting.
  • Purchasing arrangement benefits will be arranged once most people have renewed.  (The more members we have, the greater discounts we are likely to obtain.)

Free Demonstration of Horsemanship by Jay O Jay at VTEA on August 28

This free horsemanship demonstration was given by one of the best-known and most experienced horsemen in Canada. That's Jay O Jay who is now based in Langley. He gave a similar demonstration to VTEA in 2003 on VTEA's 20th Anniversary and it was a real pleasure to all that he agreed to do this again.

The intent was to give added publicity to VTEA but it also picks up an approach now being suggested by the Langley Horse Federation as a way of boosting the horse industry and horse-related activities in Langley. To help the community know more about horses, it was suggested that the development of a series of specialty clinics held by high-caliber clinicians should be encouraged. This demonstration hosted by VTEA was a fine example of what is possible.

The demonstration would not have been possible without the most generous support of Dare's Country Feed and Supply, which donated the use of a large round pen for the occasion. They also donated a number of gift certificates so door prizes were also given away including products from Greenhawk and Stampede and DVDs by Jay O Jay.

As it turned out, the event was held on the same day as the major Grand Prix event at Thunderbird Park but nevertheless over 60 enthusiastic visitors came to see this demonstration.

Jay O Jay helps riders build the foundation on which they can have a successful relationship with their horse.  Despite having broken a foot some 6 weeks prior when a horse fell and crushed his foot, he demonstrated just what is possible with his own young horses, Casper and Junior who are yearlings and step-brothers and Grace who is a 3 year old mare. He had the assistance of Melanie Williams who rode Grace to show off what can be achieved.

The session concluded with a Question and Answer session, where the horses were again involved in demonstrating the answers to some excellent questions. Anyone who wishes to follow up with Jay O Jay can call him at 778-887-1833 or e-mail him at jayojay@gmail.com.

Riding Attire for Lessons

Just a reminder that proper riding attire is strongly recommended for all riders at VTEA. This includes riding boots or rubber boots with a 1" heel, riding pants or stretchy fitted pants. Gloves are also recommended (no mittens) – riding gloves are available at local tack stores for approximately $5. Although VTEA does provide helmets, if you are riding on a regular basis it is recommended that you purchase your own helmet - these are available at local tack stores for around $50 and up. If you have any questions regarding correct riding attire, please discuss them with your Instructor and they will be happy to advise.

Pennies for Ponies Fund

Our Pennies for Ponies Fund was set up a couple of years ago and is a wonderful way to donate to VTEA. We have received hundreds of dollars worth of pennies this year. This fundraiser directly benefits our horses and ponies at VTEA and allows us to purchase much needed items for them.
